My current work, which is not yet on my website, utilizes my old paintings. Using a laser cutter, hand tools, carving knives, and a band saw, I am cutting up old paintings and drawings and reprocessing them in my jewelry pieces, which are made mostly of paper and plywood. I’m focused on layers, cycles, tearing down and building up. Like my new pieces, earth is layered, as are experience and emotions. Like the repurposed paintings, all living beings cycle from birth to growth to death to decay, from which new life is born. Similarly, all civilizations fall and are built again. In my jewelry, I am taking that which is old and recycling it into the new. It’s a very emotional process for me, echoing the seasons of my life. All is becoming.
W. B. Yeats’ poem, “Lapis Lazuli,” has particular resonance.
